A few minutes with the great Dane

INTERVIEW. We saw Dane Cook at a party this week. Well, we knew he was going to be there, since the bash was to celebrate an issue of Boston Common magazine with him on the cover. The Arlington-born comedian spoke to us about his local roots and new responsibilities. How come all comedians have to leave Boston to be successful? You have to leave to come home, and I wanted to make the City of Boston proud. I remember all the days driving in, and sitting on the crowded expressway, and I just have such an affinity for the City, and it was so supportive of me that I wanted to make noise, wearing my Boston hats and showing Boston pride, because they afforded me a great career with this foundation I laid here. Do you ever see, with all the movies being filmed here, a time when we can keep our funny people closer to us? They’re starting to call this area Hollywood East, and I was so thrilled to bring my first producing venture back to my old stomping grounds. What does the producer title mean for you? It means you get to be there for the entire process, casting, making notes on what you think might be better, scouting locations, and saying, “no, I know a real authentic joint that’s going to look like what we’re trying to accomplish.” And you get to be there for all the boring stuff, really, that dots the i’s and crosses the t’s. Did you have anything to do with the title change? I remember last year it was filming as “Bachelor No. 2”? There’s always going to be little battles back and forth, but democracy rules, so some things go in your favor and some things don’t, but ultimately it’s for the good of the film. The new title ends up acting pretty well, since you filmed in Boston, and it’s the title of a song by The Cars, who are obviously from here. I love The Cars, so you can’t go wrong there.
