Ugly Betty fashionisto Eric Mabius opens up about his wife Ivy in the June 2009 issue of Boston Common magazine

The 38-year-old actor shared, “We flirted a lot in (Amherst Regional) high school, but we never dated. I moved to [Amherst, Mass.] for the start of ninth grade, and one of the first classes I had was a science class, and that teacher doubled as our sex-ed teacher, so I literally used to have sex-ed with my future wide, which seems a little convenient, but it’s absolutely true.”

Eric is actually considering a return to Amherst: “We’re up there visiting my wife’s father all the time, and we’ve pretty much outgrown his home with the addition to our family…. We’re going to be going back there for the rest of our lives. Western Mass. has such a strong pull for us; it’s just a unique part of the world. We just saw a house that’s on a lake where we used to swim in high school. It was really cool.”

Homorazzi: Eric Mabius on cover of Boston Common

No, really… Eric Mabius is a sexy daddy- The Ugly Betty Actor and his wife recently welcome their second son to the world. Congratulations!!

Originally from Amherst, Massachusets, Eric is featured on the summer cover of Niche Marketing’s Boston Common magazine and looks hot, hot, HOT! The issue is on stands this week and here are a few highlights.

We all know Mabius as the sexy playboy magazine editor, Daniel Meade, on ABC’s Ugly Betty, who sports a great body, sexy looks and a fabulous collection of designer threads. But, he’s the first to admit that he didn’t really know much about fashion before landing the role: “I do understand 100 times more now [about fashion] than when I first started. For the show I have to try on, on average, five new suits a week, easily 20 new suits a month… What tends to work best is Dolce & Gabbana, because of the way the shoulders and waist are cut.” As if we didn’t have enough to be envious of already…

Eric also shares with Boston Common his views on the Ugly Betty cast as a whole and why, in addition to the fashion education, they make his job so enjoyable: “I’m an actor, obviously, and I find actors boring to a large extent—I can’t say the same for the people on my show, which is why I think we all get along. We’re bona fide, fairly complete people in our own right; we’re not ‘all form and no substance’ types.”

Moving from work to personal life, Eric also opens up about meeting his wife, Ivy and his two children. Eric & Ivy actually went to high school together, and although they flirted- they never actually dated. They did, however, go through sex education together in the ninth grade! Of the experience, he says, “We flirted a lot in high school, but we never dated. I moved there for the start of ninth grade, and one of the first classes I had was a science class, and that teacher doubled as our sex-ed teacher, so I literally used to have sex-ed with my future wife, which seems a little convenient, but it’s absolutely true.” Of his two children, Mabius admits, “Don’t let anyone fool you: Having two is more than twice as many as having one.”

The Amherst Regional High School alumn admits that the family is considering a return to Massachusetts:“We’re up there visiting my wife’s father all the time, and we’ve pretty much outgrown his home with the addition to our family…. We’re going to be going back there for the rest of our lives. Western Mass has such a strong pull for us; it’s just a unique part of the world. We just saw a house that’s on a lake where we used to swim in high school. It was really cool. “Regardless of where the Mabius family finds itself- I hope we find a lot more of Eric on screen! In addition to Ugly Betty- which airs Thursday evenings on ABC- Mabius also had a series of brief appearances on The O.C. as Dean Jack Hess as well as appearances on The L Word as Tim Haspel.

Jumper Classic talks with Boston Common

January 11, 2009

The Jumper Classic Relocates to New England's Premier Equestrian Center

Equestrian News Release

Gloucester, Massachusetts, January 9, 2008- The Jumper Classic, now in its 19th year, announced today that the renowned equestrian show jumping event will move to the Silver Oak Equestrian Center in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. With 75 acres of show grounds, Silver Oak Equestrian Center more than doubles the South Hamilton, Massachusetts facility at the Myopia Schooling Fields. The Jumper Classic has leased the show grounds in South Hamilton, Massachusetts for the past three years from the Myopia Hunt Club. Since its inception, the Jumper Classic has grown exponentially, reaching crowds of 12,000 and attracting Olympic medalists, European, South American and Canadian riders. In 2007, the show housed more than 500 horses over the course of the entire week-long event.

Following the September 2007 Jumper Classic, the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism estimated more than $14.4 million in spending impact on the Boston and North Shore economies. Based on ticket sales and rider participation, more than 10% of The Jumper Classic's show enthusiasts are international visitors from countries including England, Germany, Belgium, France, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, to name of few.

And, according to The Jumper Classic's General Admission and VIP ticket sales, an estimated 40% of attendees come from outside of New England. The Jumper Classic is one of only 33 AGA (American Grand Prix Association) Grand Prix's held in the United States. 2008 marks the eighth year that Fidelity Investments has been involved as their Title Sponsor. "We've simply outgrown our existing location," said Jeff Papows, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Jumper Classic and CEO of Maptuit Corporation." Following our most recent meeting with Myopia executives, we started to think 'outside the box.' There have been many people who put their heart and soul into making the Jumper Classic a premier, Olympic Caliber event, and we want to continue with that momentum.

We have found the ideal solution with the huge benefit of keeping us local to the Boston and New England community."Papows, as a competitor himself and a close associate with other competitors, said the new location offers The Jumper Classic an internationally renowned equestrian venue. There are many reasons that brought the Jumper Classic's Board of Directors to this decision and the timing is excellent allowing us to offer more to our competitors and sponsors. The new location is 23 miles north of the South Hamilton facility yet offers easier access off the main Interstates and according to "mapquest.com" is only an additional is just an additional 6 minutes in travel time from Boston, Massachusetts.

The Silver Oak Equestrian Center is designed for competitive equestrian events featuring 6 all weather rings and one of the few derby fields for Grand Prix competitions in New England. Dave Birdsall and his family are the new owners of Silver Oak Equestrian Center and long-time acquaintances of The Jumper Classic."My family and I are thrilled to partner with the Jumper Classic," Birdsall said. "Our vision for this property when we purchased it three years ago was to continue to develop it into the premier show facility in New England, and hosting The Jumper Classic will certainly help expedite that vision. Hampton Falls is a great community and we're proud to be a part of it," said Dave Birdsall. The philosophy for the show has been two-fold, one, to build a European style, International caliber event and two, to ensure that the Rider's have a central voice that is heard especially with regard to any needed improvements for the show.

According to President, Melissa Lovasco, this is a Rider's horse show, by design, and it affects every decision that is made by The Jumper Classic management. With the event's popularity and increase in entrants, Riders recently commented on the size of Myopia facility stating that it has become "quite congested". This negatively impacted the training and warm up areas for the horses and has compromised safety. These reasons did help persuade The Jumper Classic Board of their ultimate conclusion. Thanks to David Birdsall, the Jumper Classic has found a new home that will meet the growing needs of the athletes today and tomorrow. The Jumper Classic wishes to thank past Myopia administrators for their tenure at the beautiful Schooling Fields in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. The 2008 Fidelity Investments Jumper Classic will be held Wednesday, September 3 through Sunday, September 7, 2008 at their new location, Silver Oak Equestrian Center in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire.

The Jumper Classic will continue with their European style horse show, including the excitement of watching Olympic athletes who will have just competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Also featured are the many internationally recognized riders who will be vying for the $75,000 Fidelity Investments AGA Grand Prix. These are the World's finest equine and human athletes that perform their artistry with beauty, power and grace for the thousands of spectators who will gather. New for 2008 is a Derby with a purse of $15,000 which will be contested on Saturday, September 6, 2008 and will be sponsored by Mohegan Sun.2007 Jumper Classic Competition Attracted World Renowned Competitors and Well Known Celebrities. Kent Farrington, 2007 winner of the $75,000 Fidelity Investments AGA Grand Prix, took the blue ribbon for the second year in a row. Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, placed sixth in the AGA Grand Prix. The $10,000 Mohegan Sun Speed Stake was won by Hillary Dobbs aboard her horse, Marengo. Hillary Dobbs is the daughter of the award winning CNN television show host, Lou Dobbs. Frances Rivera, Channel 7 News Anchor, emceed the event and was wonderfully personable and thoroughly successful in engaging the crowd. Glen Kelley, Publisher of Boston Common Magazine was on-hand to judge the hat contest.

A unique musical experience underscored the event featuring, the spectacular voice of bluhammock music recording artist, Jim Boggia. Another exciting offering was when Gregg Amonette, Senior Vice President of Business Development for Ultimate ResortT Destination Clubs, raffled off a complimentary Ultimate ResortT 3-night stay vacation to anywhere in the world. Under the VIP tents the guests enjoyed their Pol Roger Champagne Luncheon while Cartier, the renowned French jeweler and watchmaker, had their models interact with the Jumper Classic VIP guests donning some of their most exquisite jewelry.

Rashida Jones interview with Boston Common 2009 fall issue

Rashida’s got rave things to say about Boston

“Parks and Recreation” star Rashida Jones tells the new Boston Common fall issue that she was a super geek during her Harvard years - but she liked to go to raves! “The Wonderland Greyhound Park would get rented out for raves, so my friends and I, we’d get 20 people together and dance all weekend,” the actress daughter of Peggy Lipton and Quincy Jones told the magazine. The issue hits newsstands Friday.

Boston Common hires Janet O' Leary as its new editrix

INSIDE TRACK

Gucci gala: Glitz for good cause

We didn’t dare pick up that $2,095 Babouska medium tote, but we did scoop up a piece of news the other night at the glam gathering at Gucci’s new haute Hub outpost: Boston Common maggie has hired Body + Soul associate editor Janet O’Leary as its new editrix.

The blonde singleton - who was a contributor to the Boring Broadsheet’s Sunday mag, but we swear we won’t hold that against her - replaces Terri Stanley who was sent packing months ago.

Janice’s big debut will be a $100-a-head benefit for cover girl Eliza Dushku at Alibi on March 16 hosted by baseball bride Tiffany Ortiz .

Now, the unCommonly high-end mag never charges for its cover-people parties. But publisher Glen Kelley said that was Eliza’s deal. The “Dollhouse” doll’s family, who hail from Watertown, are big supporters of Camp Hale, a New Hampshire wilderness program that welcomes inner-city kids in the summer. So remember to bring your checkbook . . .

Other boldfacers sipping raspberry blinis amongst the high-concept chic: Liberty and Charles hotels honcho Dick Friedman; Celtics [team stats] cheese Wyc Grousbeck, whose lovely bride, Corinne, hosted the event along with her fellow MassGeneral Hospital for Children do-gooders Beth Madison and Patty Ribakoff; Celtics go-to guy Leon Powe’s galpal Lauren Cook; and party planning prince Billy Evers .

Some of the 335 guests did shop, since 10 percent of the proceeds were given to the kiddie hospital. Which, we assume, takes some of the guilty edge off! But to sweeten the pot, the store kicked in $10,000 to the cause.

Also spied before bolting next door to Sel de la Terre: Paulina Neely, bride of Bruins [team stats] biggie Cam Neely, who admitted to attending four Bruins games this year (she scored Cam back in the day, but has never been a hockey fan); Fab Four Seasons GM Bill Taylor and PR gal Kristan Fletcher; Sweet cupcake czarina Courtney Forrester and hubby Michael, who told us about their new 4-week-old James Michael; the fresh-as-a-daisy Simone Winston; former TV producer Jennifer Donaldson; Boston University School of Management lecturer Jennifer Walske; Improper Bostonian man-about-town Dana Bisbee; PR guys Max Buccini (who we spied wearing a Gucci belt) and Chris Haynes with P.R. newbie Lindsay Rotondi and Crammed Media man Marc Andrew Deley, whom we saw, for once, sans his camera.

Call Jones ‘old-school’

Harvard homegirl Rashida Jones had a good time as an undergrad. The actress tells Boston Common magazine that she and her friends would sometimes stay up all night dancing. “I was actually a raver sophomore year,’’ says the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton. “The Wonderland Greyhound Park would get rented out for raves, so . . . we’d get 20 people together and dance all weekend.’’ Jones, who grew up in Hollywood, was wowed by Harvard’s history. “I had never been in a building built before 1940,’’ she said. “Even my dorm - I’d never seen anything with that much history. Everyone else was really relaxed about it, but I was tripped out. . . . I’d be like, ‘You guys, T.S. Eliot ate lunch here!’ ’’

Dushku's a doll

The enchanting Eliza Dushku, star of Joss Whedon’s new show ‘‘Dollhouse,’’ graces the cover of the new Boston Common. The Watertown-bred actress tells the mag she’s lived in LA for more than a decade, but still considers herself a ‘‘Boston girl,’’ professing her love for the Watertown watering hole Donohue’s, the Common, the Freedom Trail, Joe Milano’s Union Oyster House, and the Charles River. Of her sexy image, she says: ‘‘I hate to sound clichéd, but I love my body. I’m not super modest. I don’t ever feel like I’ve degraded myself ... I grew up with brothers and I never thought of myself as a sexy kid. I thought of myself as a tomboy. My Mormon grandma out in Utah has always told me to wear more clothes, but then she winks at me on the side.’’ Dushku and her pal Tiffany Ortiz are hosting a party March 16 at Alibi to toast the new issue.
